Recreational Soccer
The BYSA Recreational program design creates opportunities for children to learn the game of soccer in a positive and fun environment while developing lifelong skills and love of the game. Players learn to respect their teammates, their opponents, the Referee and the game. All Recreation players are required to wear shin guards covered by soccer socks. Outdoor soccer cleats are recommended, but not required. The Senior Divisions and above may play some of their games against teams from neighboring towns. Players are reminded these are opportunities to represent the BYSA and the Town of Berlin in a positive manner and to act as good citizens. Please reach out to the
Division Supervisors with your questions.
How to Determine Your Players Age for Each Division
The recreation divisions recognize a player's age as their age as of December 31st of the calendar year of the program offering. For example, a player who is three years old at the time of the Spring season registration, but turns four in September of the coming year when the Spring program takes place, will register for MiniKickers: Ages 4 - 5
Professional Trainers
From MiniKickers through the Senior Divisions, professional trainers work with the players to develop and enhance their soccer skills. These opportunities are structured to introduce and reinforce skills and knowledge that is age appropriate. The trainers are also available to answer coach’s questions. Many coaches incorporate some of the trainer’s drills into their team practices to reinforce the skill(s) with their players.
Volunteer Coaches
Volunteer Coaches are needed at all Divisions except MiniKickers to help coach the players. Periodically, BYSA offers Coaching Training Sessions led by professional trainers. These sessions teach coaches how to run a practice, select drills and other salient information.
